Yoga is the name given to the ancient Indian practice of stretching the body’s muscles while deepening the mind’s connection with the soul. Yoga is associated with the spiritual and meditative practices of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and other religions of the Indian sub-continent.
The word yoga, derived from the Sanskrit word “yuj” ,which means to control, to yoke or to unite, refers to the union of the individual soul with the Universal spirit. Outside of India, however, the term yoga has lost this spiritula connotation and is commonly deemed to be a form of exercise. A typical Yoga session is a combination of stretches, breathing exercises, strength and flexibility development techniques rounded off with a meditation session.
